There’s a reason high-pressure mercury lamps are still the go-to for high-speed printing. They just work. They put out a broad spectrum of light that gets the job done fast. But here’s the thing: we don’t just ship you a bulb and wish you luck. We actually look at your ink chemistry and how fast your line is moving to make sure you get the right fit.
The Balance of Power
Inside the lamp, it’s all about that arc discharge. By compressing the mercury vapor, we get a heavy hit of UV-C and UV-B radiation. That’s the “magic” that tells the photo-initiators in your ink to harden instantly. But you have to be careful. If you crank up the wattage but keep your conveyor slow, you’re going to scorch your materials. It’s a balancing act. We tweak the wattage and voltage until you hit that sweet spot—where everything is fully cured, but nothing is overheating.
Dealing with the Heat
These lamps get incredibly hot. Like, really hot. That’s why we use high-purity fused quartz for the envelope. It keeps the glass from cracking when the temperature swings wildly. We also use electrodes that don’t “sputter,” which keeps the tube clear and means you aren’t replacing them every five minutes. One quick tip: keep an eye on your cooling. These lamps throw off a ton of IR heat along with the UV. If your reflectors are dusty or your blowers are struggling, your lamp is going to burn out way faster than it should.
