
The Real Deal on Gallium Iodide UV Lamps
Let’s talk about Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps. If you’re working with medium-wave UV, you know these aren’t your run-of-the-mill bulbs. We build these to hit a very specific sweet spot—usually between 254nm and 310nm. Depending on how we mix the gas and set the pressure, we can dial in the exact peak you need. They’re much tighter than standard mercury lamps. That’s why they’re the go-to for high-res photolithography or those tricky curing jobs where you can’t afford any guesswork.
Getting the Spectrum Right
It all comes down to the balance of gallium and iodine. Here’s the thing: the filling pressure has to be spot on. If it’s off by even a tiny bit, the spectral output drifts. And when that happens? Your curing depth in UV resins goes out the window. To keep that light moving, we use high-purity synthetic quartz for the envelope. It ensures the UV light actually hits your workpiece instead of getting trapped in the glass.
Heat, Power, and Lifespan
You can’t just plug these in and forget about them. They need stable voltage. I’ve seen too many tubes burn out way too early because of a random voltage spike or a ballast that just wasn’t a good match. Now, cranking up the wattage gives you more intensity, but it also turns the lamp into a heater. You’ve got to make sure your cooling—whether you’re using fans or a water jacket—is actually doing its job. If that quartz envelope gets too hot, the gallium starts to migrate. You’ll see “dark ends” appearing, and your total UV output will just tank.
Making it Fit
We designed our lamps to be simple drop-in replacements for the big international brands. We spend a lot of time obsessing over the end caps and pins. Why? Because if the fit is too loose, you get arcing. If it’s too tight, the quartz can crack as it heats up and expands. We spec our connectors to handle the constant stress of industrial start-stop cycles. It means you get a consistent UV footprint without having to tear apart your power supply and rewire everything.
